Powder coating is a method of painting or coating a metal part with a dry powder like paint. The powder is electrically charged so that is will adhere to the metal which is also charged to accept the powder coating. This is done with a spray gun that charges the powdered paint as it sprays. The coated part is then put into an oven to bake. The baking process melts the powder which turns into a liquid state and evenly coats the part. This is superior to traditional wet spray paint as it creates a more powerful bond with the metal part. The powder coating process leaves a more uniform and even coating without runs or drips and is far harder to remove than traditional spray paint.
Powder coating is also more controlled as it sticks to only the areas needing coating and creates less environmental hazards than wet spray paint.
Powder coating is done in a variety of ways for a variety of applications. There are wet coatings and chemical conversion coatings for specific applications like aluminum and brass.
